Description of Artifacts
Artifact 1: Parent Letter
This artifact is a parent letter that I sent out student teaching in 4th grade. This artifact gives parents an insight into who I am; my reason for teaching, information about my family and my professional goals. |
Artifact 2: See Saw Applicaiton
This artifact is an app on the iPad that I used while student teaching. My own kiddos also use this app in their classroom. This video is my own child explaining her characteristics. |
Analysis
Artifact 1: Parent Letter
Communication with parents is important in order to support each student in their social, emotional and academic goals and achievements. The team of individuals that best supports student success consists of parents, teachers and students. Having open communication with each parent/guardian begins in the beginning of the year, with a letter sent home to share a little about their teacher and what to expect in the classroom. Communication continues throughout the year with journals sent home daily and weekly newsletters. |
Artifact 2: See Saw Application
This artifact is an iPad app that bridges communication between teachers, students and parents. It is a fun and creative way to share what is going on in school with individuals at home. Students can create videos of their work, presenting their thoughts through oral communication. It also allows for creative collaboration and peer reviews, reflection and self-assessments of individual students. As a teacher, you can create lessons, and keep track of student work, then share the success in the classroom with parents or guardians. |
Synthesis
Artifact 1: Parent Letter
Continuing communication throughout the year is important in maintaining parent-school relationships that foster educational success. I would like to begin the year with a parent letter, sent home before the school year starts, which puts anxiety and nervousness at ease before school starts. Pair this piece of communication with weekly newsletters and occasional phone calls home that celebrate each student and their success offers positivity and support in the classroom. |
Artifact 2: See Saw Application
After using this application in the classroom, I learned more about what the program can do. Using it to teach mini lessons for STEM as I teach guided math groups, is one more way I'd use the program in my own classroom. I liked the program as a parent, but after seeing what it can do in the classroom, as a teacher I love it even more. Other teachers, like specialists can also use the same program for the same students. Teacher can collaborate with each other and the student. Parents can see what the student is doing in all their classes and not just math with Mrs. Tveten. It can be used to connect many parts of a student's day, that is visible by the entire support team students have. |
